What we do
The aims of the Society are:
- To encourage high standards of architecture and town planning in Deal and Walmer
- To stimulate public interest and care for the beauty, history and character of the town and its surroundings
- To encourage the preservation, development and improvement of features of general public amenity and historic interest
How we fulfill the aims:
- We campaign to conserve the character of the town, including specific buildings which may be under threat
- We monitor every planning application that is referred to Deal Town Council and Walmer Parish Council
- A representative of The Deal Society is co-opted onto the Deal Town Council Planning Committee
- Another representative attends meetings of the Walmer Parish Council
- We make representations to Dover District Council planning department if we believe that a specific application is detrimental to the character of the town
- We monitor the long term development plans of Dover District Council and other government agencies, for example the Environment Agency
- We can advise residents about the process of dealing with planning problems
- We place blue plaques on buildings where significant people have lived, we can also advise on the criteria which are determined by English Heritage for the erection of those plaques
- We organise a winter lectures programme on a variety of topics which are free and open to the public
- We organise visits to places of historic interest and heritage assets
- We organise social events for our members to meet and engage with each other
- We publish a newsletter three times a year to keep members informed of our activities

Welcome to the Deal Society website
The Deal Society exists to maintain the appeal of Deal and Walmer
Deal is unique and The Deal Society works on your behalf to help keep it that way. Nevertheless every town faces changes which may be positive or negative so we exist to monitor those changes and to work for positive outcomes.
If you have chosen to live in Deal, you will appreciate the charm of this largely 17th and 18th century town. Historically the society came into being to protect and conserve that charm when it was under threat.
We continue to campaign to conserve the character of the town, including specific buildings which may be under threat. For example in recent years we have campaigned to reopen the Astor Theatre and the Regent Cinema.
We are a member of Civic Voice and the Kent Federation of Amenity Societies which keep us abreast of changes in planning law and other national issues which often affect us. Recently through those national and regional bodies we have contributed to changes to the Localism Act and the National Planning Framework.
